General dentistry includes all the procedures to prevent and treat tooth decay and gum disease so patients can enjoy healthy smiles at every age. Some of the procedures and treatments included in general dentistry include routine exams and cleanings, fillings, gum disease treatments like scaling and root planing, and restorations like crowns and bridges, veneers and dentures.
Once your medical records are updated, your exam will begin with a discussion of your concerns and an initial visual exam of your teeth. Next, the hygienist will clean your teeth and gums, looking for signs of gum disease and decay while removing plaque and tartar that can harbor disease-causing bacteria. The dentist will examine each of your teeth and may order x-rays. An oral cancer screening will also be performed. Once your evaluations are complete, oral care recommendations will be made based on your needs.
Gum disease can cause different symptoms depending on the stage it's in. In the early stage, the only sign may be bleeding at the gum line when brushing. As the disease progresses, gums become red, swollen and tender, and teeth appear longer as the gum begins to recede. Eventually, as the bacteria reach deep below the gum line, biting and chewing will become painful. Without immediate treatment, the tooth will become loose and fall out. Untreated gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the U.S.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends seeing the dentist twice each year for checkups and routine cleanings to help prevent decay and gum disease. Seeing the dentist every six months is an important part of making sure potential problems are caught and corrected early.
