Dental implants are artificial teeth that are implanted into your jaw so they look, feel, and function like a natural tooth. They're a very popular alternative for patients who have lost teeth due to trauma and decay because they feel much more natural and comfortable than dentures and bridges, and they can be cared for just the way you care for your natural teeth.
That's a matter of personal preference. Many people prefer them because they feel more comfortable and there's no danger of slippage or need for sticky adhesives. However, they are more costly and most dental plans do not provide full coverage for the costs of implants.
Implants usually take about three visits to complete. During the first visit, the metal post will be implanted in your jaw to act as the root of the artificial tooth. The post will need to fuse with the bone for a couple of months before the next step. At the second visit, a metal abutment will be attached and an impression will be made to serve as the mold for your new prosthetic tooth. During the third visit, the crown or artificial tooth will be attached and buffed so it looks natural and feels comfortable.
Dental implants can last as long as your natural teeth as long as you care for them properly. Although they can't decay, bacteria can still collect around the gum line just like your natural teeth, so regular brushing, flossing, and trips to the dentist are very important. Also, although they're extremely strong just like your natural teeth, they can be broken if you chew on ice, hard candy, or other hard consumables.
